Risk-informed Decision Making in Alberta: Updating Dam and Canal Safety Regulation
Javid Iqbal, Alberta Environment & Parks

Workshop 1: Operations, Maintenance, Surveillance, and Emergency Preparedness

Full-day interactive workshop, with presentations

This workshop presents the practical aspects of operations, maintenance, surveillance and emergency management in the context of dam safety risk management for both water and tailings dams. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and discuss the role of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis in risk assessments, and risk-informed decision making for dam safety management. The importance of a competent Emergency Management Program will also be discussed in the context of risk management.

Presenters include Dennis Becker (Golder Associates Ltd.), Bill Chin (Klohn Crippen Berger), Colleen Walford (AEP, River Forecasting), Rick Friedl (AEP, Central Northern Operations), and Norm Eenkooren (Suncor Energy Inc.). This workshop is aimed at professionals involved with the operations, maintenance, surveillance, and emergency management of water and/or tailings dams.

Workshop 2: Canadian Dam Association Dam Safety Reviews

Full-day interactive workshop, with presentations and case study

This workshop presents the concepts and process developed in the Canadian Dam Association's recently completed Technical Bulletin on Dam Safety Reviews. A case study is a key component of the workshop, and delegates will work through how to scope a dam safety review, how to work through the hazard-failure mode-control aspect of the safety analysis, and how to present the findings of a dam safety review.

The workshop is aimed at dam owners, consultants and regulators who want to know what the Canadian Dam Association considers to be good practice for dam safety reviews.

All instructors have gone through a training program from the CDA Dam Safety Reviews Working Group.

Note: The CDA Technical Bulletin on Dam Safety Reviews is not required but is recommended. Please bring your copy with you. If you do not have a copy but wish to purchase one, you can do so from "Shop CDA " on this website; a limited supply will be available for purchase at the registration desk on the day of the workshop.

Price: $165 for CDA members; $195 for non-members

Presented by Alberta Environment and Parks, in collaboration with the Canadian Dam Association and the Dam Integrity Advisory Committee
